The Vanier CGS program aims to attract and retain world-class doctoral students by supporting students who demonstrate both leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies.

Valued at $50,000 a year for three years, the Vanier is one of Canada’s most prestigious graduate awards.

The Vanier Scholarships support doctoral studies in the social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and engineering, and health-related fields.

Both Canadian and international students are eligible to apply.

The Vaniers are administered by Canada’s three federal funding agencies:

2012 Vanier Competition at the U of A

Eligibility *

* Eligibility criteria are based on the 2011 Vanier CGS competition and will be updated once the details about the 2012 competition become available.

To be considered for a Vanier CGS at the University of Alberta, you must:

intend to pursue a doctoral degree (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD) full-time at the University of Alberta in the May 2012 semester or the 2012/13 academic year.
have completed between zero and 20 months of doctoral studies as of May 1, 2012 (ie. may not have begun the doctoral program earlier than Sept 1, 2010).
have achieved a first-class average (equivalent to 3.5 or greater at the University of Alberta) in each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent.
be seeking financial support to pursue a first doctoral degree (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD).

The U of A Vanier CGS Committee will adjudicate, select and forward nominees to the national Vanier CGS competition by the national deadline.

PELCC is currently pre-hiring for positions commencing for the next semester, which begins this summer Aug 2011.

In addition, applicants applying for positions beginning in Aug 2011 should be a native speaker of English. Among such countries include the U.S., UK. Australia., Canada and South Africa. In the event that a teacher is recruited to work in Hong Kong, he/she will be provided with at least a 1 year working visa, which will be furnished through the Hong Kong immigration department.

Upon applying for any of our positions, all applicants will need to initially provide us with a detail resume, stating his/ her previous working experience as a NET teacher in Asia. Please note that many of our positions do not include housing; however, we will work closely with each of the institutions in Hong Kong to insure that you have the type of housing to suit your needs. The International University College of Turin (IUC) is now taking applications for the 2011-2012 Academic Year. All students accepted have the possibility of receiving partial and in most cases full scholarships to attend our program (including accommodation, monthly living stipend, travel expenses and more).

Eligibility

* Candidates from diverse backgrounds with an emphasis on law, economics, finance (business or accounting,) political science, anthropology, and sociology.
* Candidates must be at the Masters level, meaning graduation from their undergraduate program by July 2011 (does not apply to exchange students).
* Additionally a high level of English language ability (IELTS 6.5 or 7) is required. While students are not required to submit an IELTS or TOEFL score (though highly encouraged) with their application, we do expect in this case that the candidate provide some other equivalent method of reviewing language level (e.g. an academic paper written in English).

To give you some background on the college and our program:

The IUC was established in 2006 for the interdisciplinary and comparative study of law, economics and finance, in response to the clear lack of a transnational set of normative principles capable of controlling economic processes. The program specifically looks to engage students and young scholars from all over the world with special emphasis on the periphery, or ‘global south’, with leading figures in economics, law and the humanities.

The IUC offers a 1 year LLM program in Comparative Law, Economics and Finance as well as a 2 year MSc. A number of renown intellectuals and scholars from around the world serve on the faculty and advisory board, including: Guido Calabresi (former Dean of the Yale School of Law), David Gerber (Chicago Kent School of Law), Josef Halevi (University of Sydney), Duncan Kennedy (Harvard Law School), Ugo Mattei (University of Torino & University of California, Hastings), Stefano Rodotà (coauthor of the European Charter of Fundamental Rights), Amartya Sen (Nobel Laureate), Gunther Teubner (Frankfurt School), Jan Toporowski (SOAS, University of London), Gustavo Zagrebelsky (Emeritus President of the Italian Constitutional Court).

Our students are from more than 40 different countries, spanning four continents, representative of a diverse range of disciplines and cultural backgrounds, with a focus on offering opportunities to students coming from social, economic, and/or political challenges, particularly students from former colonized territories (e.g., the global south) and other newer peripheries.
